Marriott International, Inc. today announced that it has signed an agreement with Shanghai SIIC North Bund New Landmark Construction and Development Co., Ltd. to introduce the first Ritz-Carlton Reserve to Shanghai, marking the debut of the urban Reserve concept, a highly selective extension of the brand created for the world’s leading global gateway cities. Scheduled to open in 2030, the property will bring the rarity, personalization, and sense of well-being that define the Reserve experience to one of the world’s most dynamic urban destinations.
The milestone was marked at a signing ceremony attended by executives from both companies. Representing Marriott International were Anthony Capuano, President and CEO; David Marriott, Chairman of the Board; Mao Yibing, President of Greater China; Bart Buiring, Managing Director, Luxury, Greater China; and Gavin Yu, Chief Development Officer, Greater China. Joining them were Zhang Qian, President of SIIC Group; Huang Haiping, Vice President of SIIC Group and Chairman of Shanghai SIIC North Bund Landmark Construction and Development Co., Ltd.; Wang Zheng, Director of SIIC Group and General Manager of the company; Song Bo, Deputy Party Secretary and President of Shanghai Chengtou Group; Liu Yanping, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee & General Manager, Shanghai Chengtou Assets Group Co., Ltd.; and Xue Yongshen, Vice President and Chief Economist of Shanghai Construction Group. Together, they witnessed the beginning of a new urban chapter for Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Shanghai.
Ritz-Carlton Reserve has long been defined by rare, destination-driven estates that offer privacy, highly personalized service, and a deep connection to place. With the urban Reserve concept, these same principles are thoughtfully reimagined for a select group of the world’s leading global gateway cities. As a highly selective extension of the brand, urban Reserve reflects an intentional approach to growth that preserves the rarity and exclusivity at the heart of the Reserve experience. Rather than serving as a traditional luxury hotel, each urban Reserve is envisioned as a sanctuary within the city, where guests and local communities can engage with the destination through immersive cultural experiences, a deep sense of discovery, and a thoughtfully curated approach to well-being. In these dynamic urban environments, the feeling of escape is created not through remoteness, but through exceptional discretion, transformative experiences, and a slower, more intentional rhythm that responds to the evolving aspirations of today’s luxury traveler.
“Ritz-Carlton Reserve has always been about creating rare, deeply personal experiences that could only exist in their destination,” said Tina Edmundson, President of Luxury, Marriott International. “There is an intimacy to Reserve – an extraordinary level of personalization, a deep connection to local culture, and a sense of discovery and well-being that allows guests to experience a place in an entirely different way. Bringing that philosophy to Shanghai for our first urban Reserve is an incredibly exciting evolution for the brand. Shanghai is a city unlike any other, where extraordinary heritage and culture exist alongside incredible creativity, energy, and global influence. We see a remarkable opportunity to create a true sanctuary within that energy – one that feels unmistakably of Shanghai, while offering the highly bespoke, transformative experiences that make Reserve so special.”
Located along Shanghai’s North Bund, the property will be part of the city’s significant waterfront developments, combining commercial vitality, lifestyle experiences, and architectural distinction. The project will further contribute to Shanghai’s evolving luxury lifestyle and hospitality landscape, strengthening the city’s position as a leading global destination. Upon opening, the hotel is expected to make Shanghai the only city worldwide where all eight of Marriott International’s luxury brands are represented.
Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Shanghai will serve as the ultra-luxury hospitality component of a landmark mixed-use development that will also feature retail and office spaces, residences, and an observatory deck. Rising approximately 480 meters across 103 floors, the development will become a defining addition to Shanghai’s evolving skyline. Within it, the hotel is expected to feature 110 guest rooms and suites, offering a highly personalized guest experience shaped by privacy, discretion, and a strong sense of place. Many of its accommodation options will overlook the Bund and Huangpu River, including a collection of suites and a Presidential Suite.
Dining, wellness, and cultural immersion will form the heart of the guest journey, with a thoughtfully curated collection of experiences ranging from a specialty restaurant, Chinese dining experiences, a lobby lounge, and a bespoke bar. Together with an indoor swimming pool, fitness center, and spa & wellness retreat, these spaces are envisioned as places of connection and restoration, reflecting a growing desire among luxury travelers for well-being, longevity, meaningful connection, and immersive experiences. Providing a welcoming counterpoint to the pace of Shanghai, they will invite guests to engage with the city through a deeply personal and intentional lens.
“As North Bund continues to evolve into one of Shanghai’s most important waterfront districts, our vision is to create a landmark destination that contributes to the city’s emergence as a leading global center for culture, commerce, and tourism,” said Huang Haiping, Vice President of SIIC Group and Chairman of Shanghai SIIC North Bund Landmark Construction and Development Co., Ltd. “We are honored to collaborate with Marriott International on this project. Through this collaboration, we hope to create a world-class luxury property that reflects the unique character of Shanghai and delivers exceptional experiences for guests from around the world.”
The signing of Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Shanghai further reinforces Luxury Group by Marriott International’s leadership position and reflects the company’s continued confidence in the long-term growth of Greater China. As consumer preferences increasingly shift toward wellness, personalization, cultural immersion, and transformative experiences, the introduction of the first urban Reserve reflects Marriott International’s continued focus on creating distinctive, experience-led luxury offerings in the world’s most influential destinations...- Continue reading (Members Only) - Unlock Advantages with a LHN Membership - Read more here
