Thompson Rome Opens, Marking the Thompson Hotels Brand’s Debut in Italy
Inside a reimagined 1940s landmark, the hotel brings together Roman art, contemporary design, and panoramic views over the Eternal City.

Hyatt Hotels Corporation (NYSE: H) today announced the opening of Thompson Rome, a 69-room hotel owned and operated by AG Group s.r.l. and Rossifin Group, marking the Thompson Hotels brand’s debut in Italy. Set within a reimagined iconic landmark on Via delle Botteghe Oscure, the hotel is steps from Piazza Venezia and within walking distance of the Roman Forum, Pantheon, and Colosseum, pairing its historic setting with a contemporary approach to art, design, and dining.
Thompson Rome draws on the architectural character of its 1940s home and the layered history of Via delle Botteghe Oscure, one of Rome’s most significant streets and a landmark in post-war Italian political history. Original elements, including a sweeping marble staircase, have been carefully restored, while a sculptural wall and inlaid floor by celebrated Italian artist Gio Pomodoro, rediscovered during the renovation after decades hidden from view, have been preserved and given new prominence within the hotel. Bespoke furnishings, refined detailing, and layered natural materials bring a contemporary expression to the building's history.
“Rome has such a strong identity, so we wanted Thompson Rome to start with the city itself,” said Amar Lalvani, Chief Creative Officer, Hyatt Corporation and President & Creative Director, The Lifestyle Group, Hyatt. “The building, the neighborhood, the food, the people, and the way Romans live all shaped the hotel. The goal was to create a Thompson hotel that feels at home in Rome, a hotel travelers want to discover and Romans want to come back to. “Rome reveals itself over time, through its neighborhoods, its art, and, most importantly, its people. At Thompson Rome, we want guests to feel connected to that side of the city from the moment they arrive,” said Arturo Gomez, general manager. “Whether it’s discovering the artists represented throughout the hotel, sharing an aperitivo on the rooftop, or simply asking a member of our team where they would spend an afternoon, our hope is that the hotel becomes a starting point for experiencing Rome in a more personal way. And for those of us who live here, we want it to become a place you return to again and again.”
Spaces for Art, Culture, and Connection
Thompson Rome’s art program creates a dialogue between the history of the site and contemporary art. Located near the ancient Crypta Balbi, a remarkable example of Rome’s layered urban history, the hotel sits in an area shaped over centuries by the movement and exchange of merchants, pilgrims, artists, scholars, and travelers from across the Mediterranean and Europe.
The collection brings together works by artists associated with the Scuola Romana and the Scuola di Piazza del Popolo, alongside contemporary artists whose practices reflect Rome’s longstanding cultural openness and international influences, including Francesco Del Drago, Giangaetano Patanè, and Guido Strazza. Presented throughout the hotel’s public spaces and guestrooms, the artworks are an integral part of the guest experience, connecting the memory of the site with the creativity of Rome today.
A rotating artist-in-residence program will further extend Thompson Rome’s connection to the city’s creative community through exhibitions, conversations, and other cultural programming.
A Roman Residence, Reinterpreted
Thompson Rome’s 69 guestrooms and suites take cues from the character of a contemporary Roman residence, pairing warm natural materials with custom furnishings and understated details. With 19 suites, nearly one-third of the hotel’s accommodation offering, guests can choose from Junior Suites, Suites with patios or terraces, and the 104-square-meter Thompson Suite with an 80-square-meter private terrace.
Designed as a counterpoint to the energy of the city outside, the rooms feel residential and refined, with select accommodations offering views across Rome’s historic rooftops and landmarks. Several rooms feature balconies overlooking Via delle Botteghe Oscure, while select rooms offer private patios facing Rome’s historic buildings.
Rome at the Table, and From Above
Three distinct food and beverage venues carry Thompson Rome from morning espresso and leisurely lunches through aperitivo, dinner, and drinks above the city.
At LYVE Restaurant, Executive Chef Fabio Fioravanti brings a contemporary Mediterranean approach to ingredients and traditions from the Italian coast and across the region. Seafood is central to the menu, with Mediterranean fish and shellfish alongside dishes that draw on bouillabaisse, rockfish broths, wild coastal herbs, and rouille, reworked with a lighter touch while preserving the depth and character of the originals. The same attention extends to the pastry kitchen, where precise technique and contrasting flavors and textures shape the dessert menu.
A native of Ostia, Fioravanti brings more than two decades of international experience, including time with the Alain Ducasse group and at the three-Michelin-starred Le Louis XV – Alain Ducasse at the Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo. At LYVE, that technical precision carries through a dining experience that is refined yet relaxed, with the quality of the ingredients and clarity of the cooking taking center stage.
Above the hotel, LYVE Rooftop pairs views across Rome with cocktails, Italian aperitivi, and a menu designed for sharing, moving from late afternoon into the evening. The Lobby Lounge offers the hotel’s most casual gathering place throughout the day, from coffee and light fare to aperitivo and cocktails.
An Invitation Into Contemporary Rome
The hotel will extend the guest experience through a year-round program shaped by Rome’s culinary, artistic, and creative communities. Experiences will range from culinary workshops and guided tastings to Empire of Light, a photography-led experience from the hotel’s seventh floor that invites guests to discover Rome from above......
